We Are All In This Together
Last month, I talked about the importance of taking a break each day to re-boot. But it is also important to have at least a little focused time each day on the things you want to achieve. People often ask, "How do you accomplish so many things?" My answer: Do AT LEAST ONE THING each day toward your deepest desires.
For me, that could mean simply reading a book of poetry, because reading poetry helps my creative process for writing it. (This is true of any writing genre - read what you want to write!)
This doesn't mean that you will "copy" what others have written, but certain elements of the genre will stick in your psyche and help develop your own craft of word-play.
Visiting galleries, if you are an artist, has some of this benefit as well. We become inspired, think of projects, images, designs that are uniquely ours, but born of viewing other work. This has been true of the arts across time. It is inevitable that we influence one another's work in this way. We can say the same of other artforms: Dance, music, theatre. Immerse yourself in what you love and then sit down in your creative space and let things flow.
If you are not a Creative, then just take time to enjoy those arts as a vital, soothing balm to your life.
I had written a blog years ago entitled "I'm not too busy" after reading the book of the same name by artist/writer Jodi Hills. I realized how friends have avoided calling because they don't want to "catch me at a bad time" or "bother me" if I'm working on art. But at this point in my life, I've decided that spending time with friends and family is more important than anything else. We need connection now more than ever and I never leave a lunch or coffee meet-up feeling like I should have been doing something else.
Each and every one of you is here, reading my words because we connected on some level and each and every one of you is important to me, so feel free to reach out, show up, connect with me. We're all in this together!
